Scarlett Johansson covers the December issue of Interview magazine to promote her new film, We Bought a Zoo, which was directed by Cameron Crowe and has already drawn the ire of PETA. The film also stars Matt Damon, who, oddly enough, has just rubbed shoulders with PETA over his attendance at a bullfighting match. For her part, the magazine notes that Scarlett is coming off a tumultuous year after divorcing Ryan Reynolds (and feeling quite depressed as a result) before rebounding with the likes of Sean Penn and his chain-smoking toupee.
Then there were the infamous tata & booty shots downloaded around the world. Scar really did look good in those photos, didn’t she? Consequently, I’m trying to wrap my head around this photoshoot, which features Scar’s rather trimmed-down Avengers physique and a boyish hairstyle. On one hand, the stylist seems to be aiming for an androgynous vibe, which is somewhat counteracted by Scar’s poses:
On to the interview though, which is conducted by Arianna Huffington and features a lot of talk by Scar on serious subjects. Maybe:
On Being Politically Active: “I’m already planning what I’m going to wear to the next White House Correspondents’ dinner. Next time I go I’m going to find Anderson Cooper’s table and camp out there. My brother was totally geeked-out by Katie Couric. I think he followed her around the entire night. I was chasing after him, and I turned around, and I had a bunch of Republican senators chasing after me. [laughs] But honestly I think it’s the best party in town. I’d rather go to the White House Correspondents’ dinner than any awards show.”
On Balancing Fame & Privacy: “I don’t really profess to know how to balance any of it. I don’t profess to know how to balance the positive and the negative media attention. It’s a gamble every time you put yourself out there, and, certainly, I’m always readjusting to it. But I hope it never becomes normal to feel scrutinized. I value my privacy and my personal life-and I certainly don’t exploit my personal life. But that’s not always in your control. There are, unfortunately, people who are interested in prying. You know, my favorite actors are actors who are enigmatic and mysterious and never make the obvious choice in terms of the projects they do or who they work with or their craft. But I think that the less I know about an actor, the more chance I have of allowing their own persona to kind of slip away so I can get completely lost in the character they’re playing, and the more that people think they know about your personal life, the more difficult it becomes to preserve that. So when I’m not working or promoting something, I try to be as under-the-radar as I can. This has just been a bit of a crazy year.”
On Avoiding Twitter “Personally, I don’t feel the need to brand myself in that way. But as a means to share information and raise awareness of things, I think these social-networking platforms are unprecedented. They’re amazing tools to communicate information-especially about different causes or crises or movements. That said, I don’t have a Facebook or a Twitter account, and I don’t know how I feel about this idea of, ‘Now, I’m eating dinner, and I want everyone to know that I’m having dinner at this time’ or ‘I just mailed a letter and dropped off my kids.’ That, to me, is a very strange phenomenon. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do less than have to continuously share details of my everyday life. I’m always surprised that certain actors have Twitter accounts.”
On Her Work In Somalia & Kenya: Well, I’ve been fortunate enough to travel with Oxfam several times, and they’re always so well organized, so it was a good way to show the kind of work they’re doing. You read statistics all the time like, “13 million people are at risk because of the severe drought in East Africa,” but I think those kinds of numbers fall on deaf ears-there’s so much devastation in the world, that it’s a bit overwhelming for people. But by seeing a first-hand account of something like the effects of the drought in the Horn of Africa, you can have a different relationship with the story. It’s one of the blessings that come with new media. I’m hoping to go to Ethiopia in February and do a similar kind of project there because it’s an ongoing crisis, so I think it’s important to keep some focus there right now.
“It’s seemingly a whole other world. But in actuality, you’re standing next to somebody, looking them in the eye, and what you realize is that there is a human connectivity that exists between people no matter the cultural difference. You don’t even have to go that far. There are people in America who are absolutely desperate right now, who have no means to support their families, who have no opportunities to better themselves or their education-and they’re not that different from the farmers and working-class people that I visited when I went to Kenya with Oxfam. Whether they’re in America or in Africa, people want to work. They want to have purpose. They want to provide for themselves and their families. They don’t want handouts. They don’t want to be completely dependent on their governments-even though there’s usually no opportunity for that anyway. But they want to be self-sufficient and have a sustainable lifestyle. You know, I just finished this movie, The Avengers, in September, and we shot in places like Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in Cleveland, and around Ohio. We shot in a town called Wilmington in Ohio. It’s a lovely town, and the people there were really generous and welcomed us with open arms, but I’m sure part of that was probably that this film was an opportunity for commerce that they haven’t had for a long time. So these problems sometimes seem so impossibly large that it’s hard not to be pessimistic.”
[From Interview magazine]
Hopefully, Scarlett was just joking about having her outfit all picked out for next year’s White House Correspondents Dinner. Whatever the case, I’m just hoping that the wonk foot makes another appearance at the event. It would be a great annual tradition, you know? But I hate to make fun of Scarlett for what she’s said in this interview because, honestly, she seems to have a better grasp on worldly issues than most starlets these days. I know that it’s really easy to laugh at Scar for fancying herself an intellectual, but she does well here. Mostly.

Wow she looks really fake. Fakeish and cartoonish. Not a good thing.
photoshopped as hell (in real, she’s curvy)
Is she still curvy anymore? I thought she had lost a ton of weight and thus, her curviness.
She looks like a scary alien and I usually like androgynous. If it was meant to be sexy, I’m not seeing it.
After the Sean Penn donghaze incident I will never consider her hot again
Well said!
fug clothes, stupid hair = most unappealing ScarJo ever
It’s like she’s trying to show the world she could have played Lisbeth Salander after all. I’m getting a Rooney Mara vibe from these pics.
That’s it exactly. Esp the first pic.
“nods” And also the pic with the naked boobs.
The only way to desexualize her more would require an oversized burqa.
Boring.
bleh 🙁
I thought that they had whitewashed Halle Berry, the cover picture doesn’t really look like her.
I’ll assume by boyish you meant boring.
Man is she the dullest “movie star” ever or what?
The minute she lost weight for Iron Man 2 she lost her looks (aka her boobs). Now the weight has shifted into her legs. I don’t think that she’ll ever have the body she became famous for again. I feel like she’s trying to get away from the bombshell image that made her career.
Um, in what way does being “politically active” have anything to do with what she’s going to WEAR to the next WHCD?
Oh ScarJo — still a ditzy pinup, no matter the aspirations of her ex-boyfriends…….
I Thought the same thing!!
On Being Politically Active: “I’m already planning what I’m going to wear to the next White House Correspondents’ dinner.
I quit reading after that sentence. Give me a break. There is a difference between being politically active versus trying to look hot for political leaders.
Yeah, that’s being “politicaly active” for her, that and sexting Obama.
ScarJo is so annoying. She thinks if she bumps shoulders (or uglies) with smart talented people it will rub off on her.
I tots believe the Lainey blind about her being a “guys girl” with no women friends.
I have never found ScarJo all that pretty. There’s just something about her face I don’t like. I do think she was cute here:
http://www.thefashionablegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/022711-scarlett-johansson-hair-400.jpg
but she looks so cartooney and off in this shoot.
Maybe this androgynous photoshoot was a shout-out to David Fincher as a “lookie here… look at the Lisbeth Salander you missed out on” (he didn’t miss out on anything).
Those photos are terrible, unflattering and incredibly unsexy. I’ve never been wowed by her looks or thought her beautiful. So what she has a nice rack. For all that matters, so does Kim K and I can’t stand her. I just have never been a fan. I’ve never seen her in any movie that I’ve thought she was exceptional or that she stood out. She is just drab, pure & simple!
Her head looks unnaturally large. It looks like her head was photoshopped into these pictures
She was in my favies terrible cable movie, “If Lucy Fell.” Every time I start to roll my eyes at how dumb she sounds, or over her terrible choices (personal and professional), I try to remember: she was a child actor. She could be a whole lot worse.
Truly ugly photo shoot. Badly lit, poorly styled, and uninspired.
WoW, even with photoshop she is still looking like hell in those pics
I dont see the attraction here in this photo spread
Photoshop much?
It’s weird but I used to adore her so much and follow her films and it just faded away until now I can’t even be bothered to read the highlights of the interview. I can’t even understand why people find her such a good actress. Odd. I know she’s not boring but I find her dull.
Maybe my love will return someday =).
Pretentious much; she’s what a 16 yr old high school dropout not an Oxford savant – at least she’s not trying to “sing”; and her attempts at singing are beyond horrible. She will always be an empty head for me because of her comment that between movies she doesn’t know what to do with herself. All that money and no real intellect to engage her free time.
What on earth is this?
First of all, she is unrecognizable in the cover shot. Branding problem much? I thought it was Beyonce in the thumbnail. Though larger, as @jinni said, she definitely looks like Halle Berry whitewashed by use of light and/or overzealous Photoshop skin-lightening. (She also doesn’t look like herself in the last shot; she looks like the girl who played Hermione.)
Secondly, why is she androgynous? Not a good look for someone with her soft and feminine facial features, and who’s known for being curvy. Although her body has weirdly changed. I just don’t think she’s comfortable with and capable of rocking that look with confidence, and that’s why it’s so awkward.
And the comment about all the Republican senators chasing after her was a bit too much for me. Bitch, please. I used to be very positively disposed toward Scarlett, now not so much.
So unattractive.
the photos are staged and who cares. love her and she is beautiful.
…insufferable….
I don’t want to hear her complain about nude pictures and then be half naked in a magazine.
Exactly!
and what’s with the dumb-struck, ‘just been slapped but didn’t really feel anything’ look on her face?
yuck. looks like a dude with tits.
I totally agree with her facebook/twitter comment – good for you ScarJo!!
Liking her slightly more now…
Me too. No Facebook, My Space etc for me, but I value my privacy. I read an article about my son’s generation growing up without the expectation of privacy simply because of things like Facebook. Twitter just boggles me. I cannot for the life of me fathom people that twitter. Seriously, who gives a flying fig if you had a croissant for breakfast? Or you bought blue shoes, or have a dentist appointment, or …, etc. Egotistical and a colossal waste of time.
I think she looks gorgeous, and the girl is no idiot either. These photos remind me of a sixties Twiggy vibe.
I like these photos. She also looks a little like Lykke Li in a couple of them.
I thinks she looks sexy, I have never seen ScarJo look unattractive no matter what she was wearing, Let’s just be real she’s a beautiful girl photoshop or not…
On Being Politically Active: “I’m already planning what I’m going to wear to the next White House Correspondents’ dinner.
Political activism as defined by Scarlett Johanson
I don’t care what she says, I will never take her seriously. She will always be a little girl trying to walk around in daddy’s big shoes. I personally could care less how pretty or intelligent she is, her job is acting and she’s really terrible at it.
She reminds me a bit of Emma Watson in these pics. Only Emma does the waif thing better.
She looks rather homely here. Actually, she’s not all that. I used to think that in her younger years, she had potential as an actress. Now, it’s all of a muddle. I don’t think she’ll be setting the world on fire anytime soon.
such a butterface. i get embarrassed for her when she tries to be deep and intellectual.
